I have had plenty of practice trusting God with my husband, first as a missionary float plane pilot in an isolated area, and over 10 years now in law enforcement. But now our oldest daughter is gearing up to try a career in the Air Force, and I am learning what trust is all over again. It doesn’t seem like it should be different, but somehow it is harder.

It seems that having followed the Good Shepherd along this same road for so long, I shouldn’t need so much guidance, but this verse in Revelation made me feel better – even in Heaven He will still guide us! Thinking I should outgrow my need for His guidance is wrong thinking.

Revelation 7:17 NIV
[17] For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

So I’m trying to decide between shepherd and trust for my word.

I think this is going to be my anchor verse: Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV
[7] “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. [8] They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Are you going to pick a word? What are you learning?

Robyn, your post is so moving. Letting go of a child often feels heavier than any other trial. I love how you realize we never outgrow our need for His guidance. Choosing between “shepherd” or “trust” is a beautiful way to start a new year. Thank you for sharing your strengthening honesty.
