This was my husband and I 22 years ago. So young! So excited to work! We joined hands to follow God’s work and will for our lives. Over the years, the plow has changed. The look of the field in front of us has changed. Sometimes we have had the same work, and sometimes we each have our own work. We have always worked together when it comes to our girls and what the future holds. These days we are often tired from keeping our hand to the plow, but each time we look back, we see too much evidence of God’s faithfulness to not keep going. We are tired and ready for a winter of rest, but God gives us the strength for each day.

These verses are talking about delayed obedience, knowing what God’s will is but making excuses to delay doing it. As my husband seeks out what God has for him next, we don’t want to be disobedient.

What has God asked you to obey?

Luke 9:61-62 ESV
[61] Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” [62] Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

This picture reminds me so much of my younger years. My husband had a private pilot’s license and we were so young! A Cessna 150 took us, our infant son, and a paper bag of clothes and necessities to various places in the U.S. God has been faithful to bring us through. After 34 years of teaching and 7 years in Mexico, I am trying to be obedient to God’s calling along the path of retirement praying without ceasing. Nothing as dramatic as your journey; but I know God is with me all the way, and He does not waste anything. Blessings on you and your family as you keep your hand to the plow!

There’s something beautiful about the way you connect that younger photo to the present season. The image of keeping your hand to the plow through changing fields captures both commitment and growth. You describe the shifts in work and seasons with honesty, yet the thread of faithfulness remains steady throughout.

What feels especially strong is the quiet perseverance in your words. Tired but continuing. Ready for rest, yet still trusting daily strength. That balance between weariness and resolve gives the passage from Luke a lived depth rather than just a quoted verse.
