Zechariah 4:10 caught my attention this week: “For who hath despised the day of small things?”
I love that little question because we are so easily impressed by big beginnings, big results, and big answers, while God seems perfectly comfortable beginning with something almost too small to notice. A seed, a little oil in a widow’s house, five loaves and two fishes, a baby in Bethlehem.
Perhaps some of the things we are tempted to dismiss as “not much” are things God has only just begun. We shouldn’t mistake small for insignificant. God has a rather impressive history of doing a great deal with very little.
