My current book, The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton, came at a good time. It is a huge, interesting mystery just in time for a power outage here in northwest Indiana. We had a crazy wind storm with 100 mile an hour winds and trees down in almost every yard, so I have nothing to do but read.
According to Google, it is ” set during the 1866 gold rush in New Zealand. It follows a newcomer named Walter Moody who joins twelve local men meeting in secret to discuss a web of local crimes. The massive book won the prestigious Booker Prize.
My favorite quote so far is:
“‘Strange thing: you can’t tell what a fellow really looks like, you know, without animation. Without his soul…A dead man looks created. As a sculpture looks created. It makes you marvel at the work of the design…it doesn’t hold the light.”
What are you reading? What should I read next on my literary trip around the world?
