“Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.’ ” Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.”
Deuteronomy 1:28-33 NIV

I love the image of God carrying them all the way through the desert. What a God we follow!

I can’t even imagine the things the Israelites saw! And then to forget it all and not think God could defeat another country, when God defeated the Egyptians when the Israelites had no weapons?!

It is amazing how short memories can be, including mine. When my husband and I let fear or anger start to take hold, we make a list of all the ways that God has rescued us.

There are financial provisions, when money or jobs showed up at just the right moment. There were the physical rescues, during car wrecks, my husband’s mayday call, our youngest daughters illnesses, an evil spirit in our house, and my husband’s 13 years in law enforcement.

So many, many times and ways God has provided, and yet I lose sleep and wonder how we will get over the next mountain. But making our list always reminds us of what is true. As it grows I feel my shoulders relax and by the time we are done we are laughing over the crazy memories.

The truth is that I stand on a firm foundation of God’s faithfulness, and He will continue to provide.

Just now I don’t know what the future holds with my husband’s employment or our daughters’ futures, but I know I can trust God and sleep tonight!

How has God shown His faithfulness to you? How do you remind yourself of God’s faithfulness when fear tries to melt your heart?
