This journey of 80 books around the world has done exactly what a challenge should, get me to try new things. This week’s book was a graphic novel, my first one. The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien by John Hendrix is about two of England’s most famous authors, their friendship, and how they helped each other become writers.
This is what Google had to say:
“• Format: An illustrated hybrid of narrative prose, comic panels, and informative appendices, framed using two avatar guides—a lion and a wizard.
• Timeline: Chronicles their early childhoods, their traumatic service in the trenches of World War I, their pivotal 1929 meeting at Oxford, the formation of the Inklings literary circle, and the shadow and aftermath of World War II.
• Themes: Explores how their mutual encouragement, shared love for myth and Norse folklore, and conversations on faith (including Lewis’s conversion to Christianity) helped give them the confidence to write masterworks like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings despite mid-century academic prejudices against adult fantasy.”
I don’t think this genre will ever be among my favorite kinds of books, although my husband likes them, but I did find it interesting because I love the subject matter.
As someone who can’t draw anything, I also always admire people who can.
Do you like graphic novels? Who is your favorite person to read about? Where should I go next on my literary travels?
